Born in Vizcaya in 2006, the love for the mountains so present in the Basque culture soon marked her early years. At the age of eight she started climbing with her family, especially with her father, either on the rock or in the climbing halls of Durango. It didn’t take long for them to realize that this shy and modest teenager was hiding a lot of strength. However, Ainhize did not give it any importance and continued with her climbing, first for pure fun, although she gradually took it seriously.

It wasn’t until 2015, when she started training with Pedro, and later with Team Sputnik, that she became aware that perhaps her strength test results might not be as common as she told herself.

For a long time Ainhize combined rock climbing with competition, where she went on to win several difficulty and bouldering championships in the youth category. In fact, she became the absolute Euskadi champion. However, she soon began to opt for rock climbing.

And what had to happen happened. After chaining several historic routes -such as Honky mix, the first female 8c+-, in 2023 she tried Begi Puntuan, her first 9a, and chained it with relative ease.

That was the turning point for Ainhize, who realized that she could dream, as Ekhi insisted, of going even further. She already has several projects in mind for the coming years.

“He understood that he could dream, as Ekhi insisted, of going even further.

Ainhize defines herself as an orderly person, which helps her to combine her studies -she is said to be dedicated and demanding- with training.

Watching her climb is a spectacle, her movements seem more like those of a choreography than those of someone facing a demanding route. Far from the screaming that we are used to from other high performance athletes, Ainhize climbs in complete silence, if only a sigh if she falls near the chain. She makes a 9a look simple and fluid to chain and is able to turn physical effort into dance.
